Best Home Charger for a Chevrolet Equinox EV

EPA lists the 11 kilowatt and 19.2 kilowatt versions as different vehicles, with charge times of 9.5 and 5.9 hours. Find out which one you bought.

The short answer

Check which onboard charger your Equinox EV has. The standard unit is 11.5 kW / 48 A; some trims were available with a 19.2 kW / 80 A charger. EPA lists them as separate vehicles with published 240 V charge times of 9.5 and 5.9 hours. For the 11.5 kW car, buy 48 A on a 60 A breaker. For the 19.2 kW car, 48 A is still the realistic answer unless your service can spare a 100 A circuit.

This is unusually well documented, because EPA's own vehicle data distinguishes the two. The 2026 listings include "Equinox EV AWD (11 kW Charger)" and "Equinox EV AWD (19 kW Charger)" as distinct entries — which is the clearest confirmation available that the difference is real and material.

The constraint: what this car accepts

Everything else on this page follows from one number. The Chevrolet Equinox EV's onboard charger accepts a maximum of 11.5 kW, which is 48 amps at 240 volts. No wall charger can exceed it, and a charger rated above it delivers no extra speed.

Your trim may differ — the sources above are where to confirm it.

A second trim worth knowing about: EPA lists the 2026 Equinox EV AWD (19 kW charger) at 35.1 kWh per 100 miles, 288 miles of range, and 5.9 hours at 240 V. That spread is why the trim matters as much as the model when you are sizing a circuit.

The consequence: the circuit you actually need

Take the car's 48 A ceiling and work backwards. NEC 625.42 classifies EV charging as a continuous load, and NEC 625.41 requires overcurrent protection at not less than 125% of the maximum load — so a 48 A charger needs a 60 A two-pole breaker and 6 AWG copper at the 75 degC column of NEC Table 310.16.

Charge times, with the arithmetic shown

EPA rates the 2026 Equinox EV FWD (11 kW charger) at 31.1 kWh per 100 miles. That single figure lets you calculate any charge time you like, and it is why we show the formula rather than asserting a number.

The formula

hours = (miles x 31.1 / 100) / (kW x 0.9)

At 11.5 kW, this car gains about 33 miles of range per hour

The 0.9 allows for AC-to-DC conversion losses in the onboard charger — roughly 10% of what your meter records never reaches the battery. EPA efficiency figure from the US DOE / EPA fueleconomy.gov service, 2026 Equinox EV FWD (11 kW charger), queried 2026-10-05.

Rows above this car's 48 A ceiling are capped at what the car will actually accept, which is why the numbers stop improving. Calculated from EPA's 31.1 kWh / 100 mi figure at 90% charging efficiency.

For context, EPA's own published figure for a full charge at 240 V on this trim is 9.5 hours.

Connector and adapters

The Chevrolet Equinox EV uses a J1772 port for AC charging, which is what the large majority of home chargers in the US have. No adapter is needed for a J1772 charger.

You need a NACS to J1772 adapter only if you intend to use a Tesla Wall Connector, a Tesla Destination charger or a Tesla Mobile Connector. Rated headroom matters on a part carrying 48 A for eight hours — see best NACS to J1772 adapters.

EPA combined kWh per 100 miles, range and published 240 V charge times from the US DOE / EPA fueleconomy.gov web service for the 2026 model year, queried October 5, 2026. The 19 kW entry's shorter charge time despite worse efficiency is entirely the onboard charger's doing. Chevrolet has indicated the 19.2 kW option is not offered on the 2027 model year.

The 19 kW row is interesting: it is the least efficient of the three and still has by far the shortest charge time, because it is charging at nearly twice the power. Charge speed and efficiency are independent properties, and this table is the clearest illustration of that on the site.

If you have the 19.2 kW charger

You own a genuine capability, and most houses cannot feed it. 80 A continuous requires a 100 A two-pole breaker and 3 AWG copper — a 100 A continuous load is half a 200 A service before anything else in the house is counted.

So the honest recommendation is the same as for the F-150 Lightning: install 48 A unless a load calculation shows genuine headroom for 100 A. 48 A still gives you EPA's 9.5-hour equivalent, which covers an overnight window comfortably.

Get the load calculation before you decide. If your service does have the room, the 5.9-hour charge time is a real benefit — and if it does not, finding that out before you buy an 80 A charger saves you the charger.

If you have the 11.5 kW charger

Then this is a straightforward 48 A car: 60 A breaker, 6 AWG copper, and a charge rate of roughly 30 miles of range per hour. EPA's 9.5-hour full-charge figure means an overnight window covers a near-empty car.

Equinox EV FWD: charge rate by charger size

40 A9.6 kW285h 27m
48 A11.5 kW334h 33m
Calculated from EPA's 31.1 kWh per 100 miles for the 2026 Equinox EV FWD at 90% charging efficiency.

40 A is a perfectly reasonable compromise here if the circuit is materially cheaper — it costs you about an hour on replacing 150 miles.

How to find out which you have

  1. The window sticker or build sheet, which lists the onboard charger as an option line.
  2. The owner's manual charging section, which states the maximum AC rate.
  3. The car's charging screen when plugged into a charger rated above 48 A — it will show its own ceiling.
  4. The EPA listing for your exact trim at fueleconomy.gov, which names the charger directly.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

What amp charger do I need for a Chevrolet Equinox EV?

48 A on a 60 A breaker for the standard 11.5 kW onboard charger. If your car has the 19.2 kW charger, using it fully needs a 100 A circuit — which most houses cannot spare, so 48 A is usually still the right install.

Does the Equinox EV have two different onboard chargers?

Yes. EPA lists the 11 kW and 19 kW versions as separate vehicles for the 2026 model year, with published 240 V charge times of 9.5 and 5.9 hours. Chevrolet has indicated the 19.2 kW option is not offered for 2027.

How do I know which Equinox EV charger I have?

The window sticker or build sheet lists it as an option, the owner's manual charging section states the maximum AC rate, and the car's charging screen shows its ceiling when plugged into a charger rated above 48 A. The EPA listing for your trim names it directly.

How long does an Equinox EV take to charge at home?

EPA publishes 9.5 hours at 240 V for the 11 kW versions and 5.9 hours for the 19 kW one. At 48 A the FWD gains roughly 33 miles of range per hour.

Is the 19.2 kW onboard charger worth having?

Only if your electrical service can supply a 100 A circuit, which is half a 200 A service. Get a load calculation before buying an 80 A charger — if the headroom is not there, the capability is unusable.
