Best Home Charger for a Polestar 2 and Polestar 3

11 kilowatts on both cars. Polestar names ChargePoint as its US home charging partner — convenient, and not a requirement.

By Mike M.Published Last verified

The short answer

Both the Polestar 2 and Polestar 3 accept 11 kW on AC — about 46 A at 240 V — through a J1772 port. Buy a 48 A charger on a 60 A breaker with 6 AWG copper. Polestar names ChargePoint as its US home charging partner, and the ChargePoint Home Flex is a genuinely good unit — but any 48 A J1772 charger does the same job.

Manufacturer charging partnerships are worth understanding for what they are: a commercial arrangement that makes one unit convenient to buy, not a technical requirement. Nothing about a Polestar needs a ChargePoint charger.

The constraint: what this car accepts

Everything else on this page follows from one number. The Polestar 2 and Polestar 3's onboard charger accepts a maximum of 11 kW, which is 48 amps at 240 volts. No wall charger can exceed it, and a charger rated above it delivers no extra speed.

Range, efficiency and the 240 V charge time are EPA figures for the 2025 Polestar 2 Single Motor (19 inch wheels), queried from the US DOE / EPA fueleconomy.gov web service on 2026-10-05. Your trim may differ — the sources above are where to confirm it.

A second trim worth knowing about: EPA lists the 2026 Polestar 3 Long Range Single Motor (20 inch wheels) at 35.5 kWh per 100 miles, 286 miles of range, and 10 hours at 240 V. That spread is why the trim matters as much as the model when you are sizing a circuit.

The consequence: the circuit you actually need

Take the car's 48 A ceiling and work backwards. NEC 625.42 classifies EV charging as a continuous load, and NEC 625.41 requires overcurrent protection at not less than 125% of the maximum load — so a 48 A charger needs a 60 A two-pole breaker and 6 AWG copper at the 75 degC column of NEC Table 310.16.

Charge times, with the arithmetic shown

EPA rates the 2025 Polestar 2 Single Motor (19 inch wheels) at 29.6 kWh per 100 miles. That single figure lets you calculate any charge time you like, and it is why we show the formula rather than asserting a number.

The formula

hours = (miles x 29.6 / 100) / (kW x 0.9)

At 11.0 kW, this car gains about 33 miles of range per hour

The 0.9 allows for AC-to-DC conversion losses in the onboard charger — roughly 10% of what your meter records never reaches the battery. EPA efficiency figure from the US DOE / EPA fueleconomy.gov service, 2025 Polestar 2 Single Motor (19 inch wheels), queried 2026-10-05.

Rows above this car's 48 A ceiling are capped at what the car will actually accept, which is why the numbers stop improving. Calculated from EPA's 29.6 kWh / 100 mi figure at 90% charging efficiency.

For context, EPA's own published figure for a full charge at 240 V on this trim is 8 hours.

What to buy for a Polestar 2 and Polestar 3

Our picks for the Polestar 2 and Polestar 3

Both are 48 A units that reach this car's full 11.5 kW. The top pick is a house whose panel headroom is uncertain; the alternative is there because most households, and anyone with a tight panel.

Connector and adapters

The Polestar 2 and Polestar 3 uses a J1772 port for AC charging, which is what the large majority of home chargers in the US have. No adapter is needed for a J1772 charger.

You need a NACS to J1772 adapter only if you intend to use a Tesla Wall Connector, a Tesla Destination charger or a Tesla Mobile Connector. Rated headroom matters on a part carrying 48 A for eight hours — see best NACS to J1772 adapters.

The Polestar 2 at 8.0 hours is comfortably overnight-chargeable at either 40 A or 48 A. The Polestar 3 Dual Motor at 11.0 hours is the trim where the full 48 A starts to matter, particularly on 22-inch wheels where efficiency drops to 41.5 kWh per 100 miles.

On the ChargePoint partnership

The ChargePoint Home Flex is on our best Level 2 chargers list on its own merits: six selectable output levels from 16 A to 50 A, a mature app, and the largest installed base of any home charger in the US. Polestar naming it as a partner does not change those merits either way.

What the partnership genuinely gives you is a simple purchase path and a single support conversation. What it does not give you is anything the car requires. If your panel is tight, the Emporia Pro's load management is more useful than a partnership. If you have solar, the Enphase unit's 1 A solar tracking is.

Is 40 amps enough?

Replacing 150 miles, Polestar 2 Single Motor, 48 A against 40 A

150 mi x 0.296 kWh/mi = 44.4 kWh; at 11 kW x 0.9 = 4h 29m; at 9.6 kW x 0.9 = 5h 08m

A 39-minute difference

EPA efficiency figure from the US DOE / EPA fueleconomy.gov service, 2025 Polestar 2 Single Motor (19in), queried October 5, 2026.

On a Polestar 2, 40 A is a sensible compromise if it saves you money on the circuit. On a Polestar 3 Dual Motor with 22-inch wheels, we would take the 48 A.

Connector

Both cars use J1772 for AC charging in North America, so any mainstream home charger plugs straight in. For AC charging at a Tesla Wall Connector or Destination charger you need a NACS-to-J1772 adapter, and on a 48 A car the rating headroom matters.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

What amp charger do I need for a Polestar 2 or 3?

48 A, on a 60 A two-pole breaker with 6 AWG copper. Both cars accept 11 kW on AC, about 46 A at 240 V.

Do I need a ChargePoint charger for a Polestar?

No. Polestar names ChargePoint as its US home charging partner, which makes the purchase convenient, but any 48 A J1772 charger does the same job. The Home Flex is a good unit on its own merits.

How long does a Polestar 3 take to charge at home?

EPA publishes 10.0 hours at 240 V for the 2026 Long Range Single Motor and 11.0 hours for the Dual Motor. At 11 kW the car gains roughly 24-28 miles of range per hour depending on wheels.

Is 40 amps enough for a Polestar 2?

Yes — about 39 minutes longer to replace 150 miles. On a Polestar 3 Dual Motor with 22-inch wheels, where efficiency drops to 41.5 kWh per 100 miles, we would take the full 48 A.

What adapter does a Polestar need for a Tesla charger?

A NACS-to-J1772 adapter for AC charging at a Tesla Wall Connector or Destination charger. On a 48 A car, choose one rated well above 48 A — the 80 A certified parts run cooler.
