The short answer
A hardwired charger is bolted to a wall and wired into a circuit — nobody is walking off with it casually. The part that actually disappears is the adapter clipped to the handle, and a locking adapter solves that for a few dollars without adding a step to every charge. A full lockable enclosure is worth it in a genuinely exposed or shared location, with the honest caveat that people stop locking them within weeks.
What is actually at risk, in order
| Item | Risk | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| The adapter on the handle | Highest | Small, valuable, unsecured, and obviously removable | A locking adapter |
| Someone else charging from it | Moderate | Free electricity, no tools needed | A charger that requires app authorization, or an enclosure |
| Vandalism to the handle or cable | Low to moderate | Opportunistic rather than targeted | An enclosure, or a less visible mounting position |
| Cable theft | Low on a home charger | The cable is attached to the unit, which is attached to the wall | An enclosure |
| Theft of the charger itself | Lowest | Hardwired, and disconnecting it requires working on a live circuit | Nothing needed |
The ranking is the point. Most searches for securing an outdoor charger are really about the top row, and the top row has a ten-dollar answer.
The adapter problem, and the cheap fix
If you own a J1772 car and a Tesla charger — or the reverse — there is an adapter living on the handle, outdoors, all day. It is small, it is worth real money, and it comes off without tools.

A driveway charger nobody is watching
EVDANCE NACS to J1772 Adapter with Security Lock
An 80 A NACS-to-J1772 adapter with an integrated lock, so it cannot be walked off with. For a J1772 car charging on an outdoor Tesla Wall Connector, this is the single most effective security purchase available — and unlike an enclosure, it does not make charging more annoying.

The alternative is simpler still: take the adapter inside. It works, it costs nothing, and the reason people do not do it is the same reason they stop locking enclosures.
Stopping other people charging from it
A real concern on a street-facing driveway, and there are three answers of increasing inconvenience:
- A charger that requires app authorization to start a session. The cleanest answer, because it costs you nothing daily. Most smart chargers can do this — check before buying if it matters. See best smart Wi-Fi EV chargers.
- A lockable enclosure, which prevents access entirely.
- Mounting position, which is free: a charger around a corner or behind a gate is a charger nobody notices.
Worth a sense of scale: a charging session costs a few dollars of electricity. The reason to care is usually not the money but the principle, and a free app setting handles it better than a steel box.
Lockable enclosures: the honest assessment
If an enclosure is the right answer for your location
The large steel enclosure for maximum protection, and the version with a viewing window so you can see the status light without unlocking — which is the practical annoyance of every other enclosure.

An outdoor charger in a shared or street-facing driveway
Lockable Outdoor EV Charger Enclosure (large)
A wall-mount steel box sized for a Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint or Grizzl-E. It is not weatherproofing — your charger is already rated for weather — it is theft and vandalism protection, which is the actual risk on a street-facing install.

Locking a charger up without losing its status light
Outdoor EV Charger Lock Box with Viewing Window
A lock box with a window, which solves the practical annoyance of every other enclosure: you can still see the status LED without unlocking anything.

A cheaper lockable box
Ufixed Outdoor EV Charger Enclosure with Lock
A smaller, cheaper lockable metal box for a Tesla Wall Connector or ChargePoint. Same job, less steel.

The free measures, which are often enough
- Mounting position. Round a corner, behind a gate, inside a carport, or on the house-side wall rather than the street-side one. Free, permanent, and no friction.
- Lighting. A motion-activated light over the charging area deters opportunism and makes plugging in easier at the same time.
- Take the adapter inside. Zero cost.
- Enable app authorization, if your charger supports it.
- A holster. Not a security measure, but a handle in a holster is less obviously loose than one on the ground.
A note on pedestals
A freestanding pedestal in an open driveway is the most exposed configuration there is — visible from the street, reachable from every side, and nothing above it. If security is a concern and you are choosing between a wall mount and a post, the wall wins. Pedestal against wall mount covers the trade-offs.
